The Legion of Mary

The Legion of Mary is an association of Catholics who, with the sanction of the Church and with the powerful leadership of Mary Immaculate, are dedicated to give Love, Honor, Prayer, and Service to God and the Church.

The Legion of Mary was founded by Frank Duff, a Servant of God (1889-1980).  He spent years in mission work and made many sacrifices for God.  He exhibited love and faithful service to Mary, Our Mother with True Devotion.

The first Legion of Mary Praesidium was formed in Dublin, Ireland, on September 7, 1921.  Today, the Legion of Mary is a worldwide association with over 6 million active members and 20 million auxiliary members.  All are praying members.

The Legion of Mary is the largest organization of lay people in the Catholic Church, with well over six million active members and 20 million praying members throughout the world.  Through the lay apostolate of the Legion of Mary, men, women and children sanctify themselves by prayer and spiritual work in union with Our Lady and under the guidance of the Church.

Mother of Sorrows Ministry of Care

In a continuing effort to reach out to parish members who are unable to attend church services, we want to remind you that an Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion to the Homebound will bring communion to your home.  By calling the Pastoral Center at 724-733-8870, or Judy Schlenke at 724-733-7633, a time can be scheduled at your convenience either weekdays or weekends.  Ministers of Holy Communion are members of our parish who have been trained for this Ministry, and are commissioned by the Diocese of Greensburg.  Please remember that this short visit is about you.  The minister does not expect food or drink.  We look forward to serving you.

Christian Mothers/Ladies Guild

Our Guild is one of more than 3400 parish units linked to the Pittsburgh Archconfraternity at
St. Augustine Church.  The Confraternity of Christian Mothers was started 151 years ago in 1850.

The main purpose of the Guild is to give support and help keep women aware of their high vocation as mothers, to aid them spiritually, help them focus on traditional family values, and especially to help in the character formation of their children and share in the prayers and charitable deeds for the parish and community.  All women of the Parish are eligible for membership.

Your obligation as a member will be to recite the Christian Mother’s Daily Prayer, receive Holy Communion at least once a month for yourself and other members, and attend the regular meetings whenever possible.  The benefits of a member include instructions on Christian family living; a chance to work for our parish, diocese and community; a share in the prayers and good works of thousands of Christian Mothers; many plenary and partial indulgences; a Mass and group Rosary offered for any deceased member whose family requests one; a Mass offered in November for all deceased members and in May for all living members.

Our meetings are held the first Wednesday of the month in the Church Hall beginning at 7:00 p.m.  Our meeting consists of a short business meeting, program and social time with refreshments.  You need not be a member to attend any of our meetings or social functions—all are welcome!

Some of our parish, diocesan and community activities include:

  1. Participate in DCCW (Diocesan Council of Catholic Women) events
  2. Visits to St. Anne’s Home in Greensburg (with Deanery III)
  3. Participate in the Golden Wedding Anniversary reception held at the Cathedral  (September)
  4. Make complete arrangements and host Senior Graduation Mass and breakfast (end of May, beginning of June)
  5. Plan and host Mother/Daughter/Son Banquet in May for parishioners
  6. Plan and host December Holiday Party for women of the parish
  7. Craft show first weekend of December (fundraiser)
  8. Some of our Ladies:
    1. Make and clean altar linens
    2. Clean and mend server albs
    3. Make the Madonnas we give to couples married at our Church
    4. Make Rosaries for the missions

Women’s Bible Study

Bible Study can lead you to a fuller understanding of the Scriptures, a richer appreciation of our faith tradition, and a deeper relationship with God.  It is for women at all points in their faith journey, whether you are a veteran of bible studies or a novice.  In fact, one of the strengths of our group is the involvement of women of all ages and varied experiences, the melding of wisdom and fresh perspectives.  We are wives, mothers, grandmothers, daughters of elderly parents, stay-at-home moms, professionals, and part-time employees all bound by a common goal:  Making time for God in our busy lives.

The Women’s Bible Study (WBS) uses published scripture studies from a variety of Catholic resources.  These studies combine personal Scripture reading and reflection with small-group faith sharing.  The studies also often include video lectures.  Each session begins and ends with prayer.

There are two different WBS groups at Mother of Sorrows, one meeting on Wednesday mornings from 9:30 AM to 11:00 AM, the other on Wednesday evenings from 7:30 PM to 9:00 PM.  Both groups meet in the Priest Room behind the staircase in the lower narthex of the church. Posters with current study and contact information are on the bulletin board in the lower narthex of the church.

If you have any questions, please contact Sherri Tollari at 724-325-3901 (e-mail: Sherritollari@yahoo.com) for the morning study and Raissa Federline at 724-733-5908(email: rsvpf@hotmail.com).

Mother Teresa Outreach
Mother Teresa Outreach

Moved by the events of Hurricane Katrina and inspired by Mother Teresa's life of Christian service, the Mother Teresa Outreach has been serving the community from Murrysville to Biloxi and beyond since September 2005.  Mother Teresa Outreach is operated by concerned parishioners who wish to support those in our local and world communities who are currently experiencing hardship — whether emotionally, spiritually, physically, or financially.

Mother of Sorrows Music Ministry

There are many opportunities to be part of the variety of musical ministries at Mother of Sorrows Parish:

The Adult Choir sings for the 9:30 am liturgies on Sundays and for major liturgical celebrations throught the year.  The choir meets on Tuesday evenings for rehearsals from 7:30 pm - 9:00 pm.  The music they provide is very diverse, from traditional to contemporary, and even Gospel.  They also work on classical repertoires such as Handel's Messiah, Vivaldi's Gloria and Faures Requiem, in addition to many, many others.

The Adult Choir has a special program they provide before Midnight Mass on Christmas Eve, and they also have a special program for the Lenten season called Tenebrae which reflects on Christ's Passion, with special readings and appropriate songs that reflect on the readings.

Our Contemporary Group provides music for the 11:15 am liturgies on Sundays, and they sing for special prayer services throught the year when needed.  They have a large repertoire of music written by the latest composers, as well as favorites from the standard contemporary repertoire.

The Contemporary Group welcomes instrumentalists such as guitarists, flutists, drummers, etc. to share their talents by adding to the sprirt of the music.

Mother of Sorrows also has a Children's Choir which sings for special liturgies throught the year.  One liturgy that is particularly important is the Christmas Eve Children's Mass, where a half-hour program is done by the children, including child instrumentalists.  We invite children from grades 3 and up to participate.

We also have a very dedicated group of singers for our Funeral Choir; this could be an outlet for individuals who want to be in Music Ministry, but are unable to commit to the other choirs on a regular basis.

A Cantor is also an important minister at Mother of Sorrows.  We welcome individuals with good leadership skills and strong voices to consider this ministry as it is of vital importance to Parish liturgical celebrations.

Throughout the year, special concerts are also provided by guest performers to enrich the cultural life of the Parish, and these concerts are advertised in advance.

If you would be interested in participating in any (or all) of these areas of our music ministry, we would love to have you!  Please contact Will Smith, Director of Music Ministry, at the Pastoral Center, by calling 724-733-8870, extension 17.  You can also email Will at
wsmith@dioceseofgreensburg.org.
